Where that sits in Missouri

Five Missouri counties logged fifty or more hail events across that six year window. In order: St. Louis County at 125, Greene at 83, Christian at 77, Barry at 58, and St. Charles at 54. St. Charles County is therefore fifth in the state by count of reports.

It is first of those five by average stone size. St. Louis County averages 1.32 inches, Greene 1.10, Christian 1.29, Barry 1.22, St. Charles 1.48. The county also ties the largest maximum among them at 3.0 inches. Whatever else is true, the hail that gets reported here is on average bigger than the hail that gets reported in the counties that report more of it.

The caveat that makes this honest

These are counts of logged reports. They are not counts of storms, they are not counts of insurance claims, and they are certainly not counts of damaged roofs. A hail report exists because a human being saw stones, judged their size, usually against a coin or a ball, and told somebody. Reporting density therefore tracks population and tracks how many trained spotters live in an area. St. Louis County has far more residents than St. Charles County, so a meaningful part of the gap between 125 and 54 is people rather than weather.

The size figures are less exposed to that problem than the counts are, which is why we lean on them and not on the totals.

When it happens

Metro hail is a spring phenomenon. Around 56 per cent of the region's annual hail reports fall in April and May, according to the National Weather Service climatology for the St. Louis forecast area. That is the window in which a roof gets hit and the window in which every roofer in the county is busiest, which is the same reason the middle of a wet April is the worst time to be shopping for one in a hurry.

The 2025 season, and what it did not cover

The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance reported 253,241 catastrophic claims from the 2025 season with more than 2.9 billion dollars paid, around 83 per cent of it residential. Those are statewide figures.

The single most destructive event of that season in this region was the tornado of 16 May 2025, rated EF3 by the National Weather Service at 152 miles per hour, with a path 22.6 miles long and a maximum width of 1.8 miles, which makes it the widest in the region across the modern record, a record that begins in 1950. It began near Clayton and it ran east. Five people died.

It matters for readers of this sheet that the federal disaster declaration which followed, DR-4877-MO, covered St. Louis City and St. Louis County. It did not cover St. Charles County. Nine thousand four hundred and twenty seven individual assistance approvals and 58.13 million dollars of individual and household programme money went to those two jurisdictions, along with 105.01 million dollars of public assistance. If you live in this county and read coverage of that season assuming it applied to you, it did not.

Two national rankings, kept separate

Missouri ranked fifth nationally for major hail events in 2025, with 253 of them, according to the Insurance Information Institute citing NOAA's Storm Prediction Center. Separately, State Farm ranked Missouri second among states by hail claim dollars paid. Those are two different measurements from two different bodies and they are frequently welded into one sentence online. They should not be. One counts storms, the other counts money.

A Missouri credit worth knowing about, and it expires

RSMo 135.445 creates a Missouri tax credit equal to the amount of a homestead insurance deductible incurred during 2025, capped at 5,000 dollars, and it is transferable. The statute provides that no new credits are authorised after 15 October 2026. If your household had a covered loss in that period, this is worth raising with whoever prepares your return, and it is worth raising soon. We are a roofing company and not a tax adviser, so that is as far as we will take it.

A broad expanse of newly laid brown, tan and charcoal multi tone architectural shingles filling most of the frame, with the capped ridge and a dark ridge vent running down the right side, two black box vents and a metal flue near the far end, and a back yard with a large tree, a chain link fence and a white vinyl house below

Plate 1

A Keys job in the greater St. Louis area. A finished plane of brown, tan and charcoal multi tone architectural shingle, with the capped ridge and the dark line of a ridge vent down the right hand side. Two black box vents and a small metal flue sit near the far end of the ridge. Below is a back yard with a large tree, a chain link fence and the neighbour's white vinyl house, which is the ordinary suburban stock this company works on.
